MORGANTON PLUMBING EMERGENCIES

Emergency Plumber in Morganton, NC: What to Do in the First Hour

A burst pipe, a failed water heater or a sewer backup: stop the water, protect the house, then get the right person on the job.

Public utility rates and government fees, not plumber prices.

Stop the water first

Every plumbing emergency gets cheaper the moment the water stops. In most Morganton houses the main shut-off is a gate or ball valve where the supply line comes through the foundation, often in the crawlspace near the front of the house, sometimes in a basement or a utility closet. Find it before you need it. If it is a gate valve that has not been turned in years, turn it gently; old gate valves can break off at the stem.

If the house valve will not close, the city meter box near the street has a valve on the city side. City staff operate that valve, and the fee schedule lists disconnect and reconnection charges for service calls, so read the table below before you ask for it after hours. Homes on a private well have no meter; switch off the well pump breaker instead, which stops the pressure tank from refilling the broken line.

Once the water is off, turn off power to an electric water heater at the breaker, or set a gas unit to pilot, so it does not heat an empty or draining tank. Open the lowest faucet in the house to drain the lines, and open an upstairs faucet to let air in.

What the City of Morganton charges to turn water back on

Reconnection fees depend on the time of day. The FY 2026-27 schedule lists one fee during the working day, a higher fee after 4:00 pm, and a higher one again on weekends. There is a separate disconnect charge, and a much larger fee for disconnecting and reconnecting sewer-only service. Reconnecting service yourself is penalized. These are city utility charges; a plumber's call-out fee is separate and is set by the plumber.

Burst pipes and water through a ceiling

Water coming through drywall usually means a supply line above has split or a fitting has let go. After shutting off the main, poke a small hole at the lowest point of a bulging ceiling with a screwdriver and catch the water in a bucket. That relieves the weight and often saves the ceiling. Do not stand under a sagging ceiling, and keep clear of light fixtures that have water in them; switch those circuits off at the panel.

Freeze damage is common in Morganton in January and February. The pipe often splits where it runs along an outside wall or through a vented crawlspace. The burst pipe guide covers thawing, what the repair usually involves, and how to document the damage for insurance.

Sewer backups

Sewage coming up a floor drain, tub or lower toilet means the drain line is blocked somewhere between the house and the city main, or the septic system is full or failing. Stop running water in the house at once; every flush and every load of laundry pushes more water toward the blockage. Keep people and pets away from the water, and open windows.

In the city, the property owner usually maintains the service line from the house to the city's connection, and the city maintains the main. A plumber with a camera can tell you which side the blockage is on. On septic, the septic guide explains what Burke County Environmental Health needs for a repair. More detail is in the sewer backup guide.

Water heater failures

A water heater that is leaking from the tank itself cannot be repaired; the tank has to be replaced. Shut off the cold supply valve on top of the heater, turn off the power or gas, and attach a hose to the drain valve to empty it toward a floor drain or outdoors. If water is spraying from the temperature and pressure relief valve, the unit may be overheating; turn off the energy source first.

Replacement is permitted work. Inside the city, the plumbing permit and inspection fees come from the City of Morganton; in the county, from Burke County Building Inspections. The water heater guide covers the details.

What to tell the plumber when you call

A clear description saves time on the phone and on site. Say what happened and when, whether the water is off, whether you are on city water or a well and city sewer or septic, and whether the house is inside Morganton city limits or in the county. Mention the age of the house if you know it; older homes in Morganton's historic neighborhoods can still have galvanized supply lines and cast-iron drains, which change what the plumber brings.

Ask for the price of the visit and how the repair will be priced, and whether a permit will be pulled. If the job is after hours, ask whether the rate is different. Write down the name of the company and the person who will arrive.

Who pays for what

The city charges for meter work and reconnection under its fee schedule. The plumber charges for the repair. Your homeowner's policy may cover sudden water damage to the house but usually not the repair of the pipe itself; check your policy and photograph everything before cleanup starts.

Quick answers for Morganton homeowners

How much does Morganton charge to reconnect water after 4 pm?

The FY 2026-27 schedule lists $75.00 for reconnection after 4:00 pm and $100.00 on weekends, compared with $25.00 between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Where is the water shut-off in a Morganton house?

Usually where the supply line enters through the foundation, often in the crawlspace or basement. The city-side valve is in the meter box near the street.

Is a sewer backup the city's problem or mine?

It depends where the blockage is. The owner typically maintains the service line to the city connection; the city maintains the main. A camera inspection shows which.

What if I am on a well?

Turn off the well pump breaker to stop the pressure tank from refilling a broken line.
